Nerkonda Paarvai – Pink – Why such movies are necessary?

I know I am late to the party of celebrating Ajith’s movie choice, H. Vinoth’s detailing, Yuvan’s music and all Ajith Kumar’s fans feeling sad for not seeing their favorite star do some action scenes instead of talking in the court. When they announced Pink remake in Tamil, all I wanted was the filmmakers and the Star value doesn’t bring down the core of the movie. Fortunately nothing like that happened and I am extremely happy that someone with the Star power like Ajith starred in this movie.

When the movie was released, one my friend’s, a girl whose opinions I value a lot had a long argument about Pink, Nerkonda Paarvai and the film industry utilizing the raising uproar of feminism to its advantage. She wasn’t quite happy about this at all. On the other hand I see such movies aren’t preaching but give more or less moral science lessons for adults. In this time and age where women are slut shamed, body shamed for what they choose to do, this film stands a chance to teach its audiences about women’s choices and it is their choice alone, not yours to judge.

Some of the gripes I had with this movie and the original Pink was those creepy stares from the lead actors, they zoning out etc., Especially in Tamil after that particular fight sequence followed by the court scene where the girls doubt Ajith’s capability to take their case and present their situation, it wasn’t up to the mark of the original. Nevertheless, the message was passed and reached so many people for which I will completely forego these minor issues the movie had and considering the subject it handled. If the movie as a whole was bad then I would have had a problem but this movie handled so many things perfectly except for that Bi-polar disorder and unnecessary cliched flashback.

One good thing about remakes is that, the directors who take up the job can fix certain loopholes and make it ever better, I believe H. Vinoth tried the same with adding extra 15 minutes to the movie which I felt really unnecessary. This post is not just about the review of the movie but did the movie achieve its intent? I would like to share some personal anecdotes based on my online interactions with strangers.

Are Movies reflection of the society or are they just gimmicks?

Let’s see, I advocate the idea that films largely shape the opinion of people. Owing to its mass appeal and the visual medium it is, it ha the power to reach the masses easily and also can manipulate them with ease. I am one of those 90’s kids who grew up in a small town in the South of Tamilnadu. My understanding towards society, the big city and women were shaped by these movies, because you see the patriarchal and indoctrinated upbringing we have. We simply fall into the closet and never come out until and unless we are open enough to understand and respect others

So, you might ask why pose this question in the first place? Well, many believe that movies are a reflection of the society but in reality, society takes a lot from the movies and the movies take from society. It is not necessary that every movie should be message heavy, also it is okay for movies to have messages. Well, you might ask If the movies like Nerkonda Paarvai or Pink get a good box office, won’t it put a pressure on the producers to make such message heavy movies which would come out as pseudo-feminist or anti-feminist or half baked message heavy movies? (Remember I mentioned one of my friend’s in this blog post? She asked this question to me). Yes, we will get a whole lot of movies of that sorts and people will go crazy over those mediocre and propaganda movies. Well, we aren’t living in a utopia, some people get it right most don’t. To conclude the argument, movies are the reflection of the society is just a gimmick.

Did the movie achieve its intent?

To a larger extent, a big NO. People still think that the hero advocates the idea that women should know their limits and men gave their freedom. Well, they didn’t get the actual message there I guess. Is it because they are not ready to come out of the closet?

I really don’t know but movies like these should come very often. Every man and Woman should realize that women don’t bore the honor of certain Sect/Caste/Religion. Why put so much burden on women in the name of family honor or Caste honor? Who gave the rights to men that they can put Terms and Conditions applied? Well, that’s the privilege they think they have. The process of teaching equality is slow and painful but it is necessary and need of an hour.

The movie certainly did achieve its intent to an extent but not to the fullest which is completely understandable. One step at a time I guess and we have a long way to go. I highly recommend people to watch Nerkonda Paarvai (Tamil) or (Pink). It is okay that the film industry is utilizing the feminism uproar, until and unless they don’t give pseudo stuff we are good with appreciating such efforts.

So, What did you think about Pink or Nerkonda Paarvai. Come, lets have some fruitful discussion in the comments section.

Pink is a very powerful movie. Everyone should watch it at least once. I agree with you, more movies like Pink should be made, and often.

I didn’t see this movie, but I will watch this as I like the review.

Exactly, Why put so much burden on women in the name of family honor or Caste honor?

Please do. Also, with regards to putting the burden on women is how our parents, grand parents and before them did. It will eventually change.

I watched the movie with people of varied age range.. And the young accepted it better than the others.. The way each conveyed the crux defined their level of understanding..

I think the issue is not with the movie, but with the viewer.. For someone who’s determined to sleep, how could you wake them ever?

Maybe these movies have an impact in the long run.. Also, I think movies are taken from a very small part of life, made into a movie and then it impacts the society at large and setting the tone for the future..

Very well, I am happy to know that the young accepted the movie well. Yes, a movie or a book or any art form for that matter will be perceived differently by each.
I completely agree that the movie doesn’t have a problem but the viewer alone. It is just that they don’t want to come out of where they are and think that the world is just as they think it is.

One of the best movie ever! We need more such stories in real life.

It has its flaws but I agree we need more movies like this. I get tored of hearing ‘leave your brains at home’ whenever people talk of Bollywood films in particular… surely at some point of time, the viewer has grown up and needs an actual theme and story instead of slow mo entrances and flying villains

I must compliment you on how you have gone about reviewing the movie. Such a detailed take. Your mind about the social relevance of such movies, your personal example of growing up in a small town and how cinema impacted you…This is more than just a movie review. So, well done!

The movie Pink is a very powerful indictment of all the vices associated with women in our male-dominated Indian society. What I loved were the fantastic dialogues which aren’t just lines; they are a mockery of our society’s double standards. They’re also guidelines for those who need to learn to respect a woman.

Completely agree. Unfortunately people didn’t understand that mockery instead they thought as an advice to womenfolk. I have literally fought with many that they interpreted it all wrong.

Pink was such a soul stirring movie. I have heard Nerkonda Paarvai is equally good. Nice post.

I have watched Pink and I like the movie for the message it gave. Movies with messages are good for society, they encourage discussions which would not happen otherwise.

When I watched it for the first time, I couldn’t finish it. Its a very powerful movie. And yes, No means No. If the people who take girls for granted can understand it then the society would be a much better and safer place to breathe.

Hey Pratip,

I loved the title of this blog 🙂 And how far my opinion goes such movies definitely leave an impact on the society, but positive changes occur only when it is realized. We see these movies, appreciate them for the time being and then we forget them. There have been a lot of movies in the past as well which had depicted the illogical mindset of our Indian society, but I guess our society is still the ‘same’ – illogical.

you may find me as a Critic, but this is the Truth.

Hey Samidha, Thanks for taking your time and reading my blog. Yes, I completely agree with you regarding the discussion which happens for time being. Well, it is impossible to expect an immediate change. If 1 or 2 change their views towards women or society isn’t that an achievement in itself?

September 19, 2019 at 2:40 pm

Pink is really nice movie and with a powerful message this is really important to see such movies and promote it for spreading the powerful message.

September 20, 2019 at 2:42 am

Well I have only seen Pink and I wholeheartedly agree to you..movies definitely affect the thought process of the audience even if it is for a tiny bit. Bcoz u know when Amitabh bachchan speaks something people listen . I loved the monologue in the last scene by him .. it was so impactful and true..

The movie was definitely powerful with a powerful message. But how far and wide it was conveyed is the biggest question. #MyFriendAlexa #CloudandSunshineReads

Movies and society are reflection of one another, so cannot say movies are complete gimmick. And sometimes a message is strongly put across audience by movies.
